NITF Features

The LEADTOOLS NITF Plug-in provides functions that enable you to manipulate the NITF file format in your Windows applications. This API is included with LEADTOOLS Document Imaging products.

The National Imagery Transmission Format Standard (NITFS) is the suite of standards for formatting and exchanging digital imagery and imagery-related products defined by the United States Department of Defense (US DOD). This standard allows for interoperability of systems used for formatting, transmitting, receiving, and processing imagery and imagery-related information, and describes the National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) file format. For full background on the origination and purpose, and specifications of this standard, refer to the Department of Defence Interface Standard MIL-STD-2500B. and the NITFS Technical Board Public Page.

The purpose of NITF is to transmit a file composed of an image accompanied by subimages, symbols, labels, text, and other information that relate to the image. One of the main features of the NITF is that it allows several items of each data type to be included in one file, yet any data types may be omitted. Examples of applications and capabilities that have been developed to exploit NITF standards include: remote platform video display, georegistered image sectioning, image dissemination management systems, and interactive geospatial image annotation.
