Effectively acting as the primary middle tier, the XML Web service handles authentication and data requests from any client application that accesses the service. In detail the web service exposes the following functionality:
• User authentication.
• Querying for studies and series stored in the database.
• Retrieving study and series information.
• Retrieving the attributes of a DICOM image or file.
• Retrieving the images under a series as a thumbnail.
• Retrieving the images in a series after recompressing them using JPEG or JPEG 2000 compression.
