The LEAD Audio SPDIF Passthru is a DirectShow® filter for passing the AC3 (Dolby Digital) or AAC (DTS) surround sound signal to an S/PDIF audio renderer.
The LEAD Audio SPDIF Passthru filter passes surround sound signals including 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 to external devices, such as surround sound systems or home theater receivers, that are capable of decoding a Dolby Digital or DTS signal.
When used in conjunction with an external device capable of decoding AC3 (Dolby Digital) or AAC (DTS) files, the LEAD Audio SPDIF Passthru filter makes it possible for a user to play AC3/AAC files without a software AC3/AAC decoder. Without either the external device or LEAD Audio SPDIF Passthru filter, the user will need a software AC3/AAC decoder to play AC3/AAC encoded files.
If speakers are connected to an external device capable of decoding a Dolby Digital or DTS signal, passing the S/PDIF signal to the external device provides higher quality audio because the external device decodes the audio to preserve the surround effect. Software decoding without passing the S/PDIF signal to an external device will often generate only stereo sound, even if the audio source is surround sound.
